The rain poured down in sheets. My phone said that my Uber was just minutes away. Soon, a car arrived, and I hurried inside, happy for the shelter from the storm.
"Evening," the driver said, his voice warm and welcoming. "Where are we headed tonight?"
I gave him my address, and we headed out into the stormy night. The mood inside the car was comfortable, with light classical playing in the background.
"Terrible weather we're having," I stated, attempting to start up a conversation.
The driver nodded. "Indeed. But there's something about the rain that gives the city an additional attraction don't you think?"
I smiled, glad for his insight. As we spoke, I was captivated to his easygoing demeanor and profound views, but a growing feeling stayed in the back of my mind that something was amiss...
Suddenly, the car made an abrupt turn along a darkly lit street, deviating from the regular route to my destination. I looked at the driver, feeling uneasy.
"Um, excuse me," I began nervously, "this isn't the way to my house, is it?"
The motorist did not meet my gaze, instead focusing on the road ahead. "Just a minor detour. It's fine; get comfortable."
His comments sent shivers down my spine, and I couldn't ignore the feeling that something was seriously wrong. Still, I attempted to convince myself that he knew the highways better than I did.
However, as the minutes passed, my suffering became more intense. The new surroundings appeared to shut in on us, stifling me with their oppressive silence.
"Can you please tell me where we're going?" I asked, my voice showing a sense of anxiety.
The driver remained stoic, providing little reassurance. "Nearly there. "Just a little farther."
But when the car came to a quick pause in front of a dark where I couldn't see anything, my heart jumped into my throat. Panic overtook me as I grasped the enormity of the situation.
"This isn't right," I said, my voice shaking. "Let me out of the car... now!"
The driver turned to face me, his face unreadable. "Reached."
With that enigmatic comment, he bid me farewell and drove away into the darkness, leaving me alone with my building fear.
As I groped for my phone to call for help, I found with dismay that there was no record of my Uber ride ever being scheduled. It felt as if the entire interaction had been a figment of my imagination.
I was shaken to my core, and I couldn't escape the feeling that this encounter was only the beginning of a much larger confusion waiting to be uncovered....
